Neighbour estimates store could attract 50 to 100 customers daily.
Peterborough, Ont. is finally getting its first legal pot shop, but not everyone is pleased about the incoming business and the parking wars that could ensue.
Growers Retail is set to be located at 225 George St. North in downtown Peterborough, after a change of planned locations occurred late last year.
But Doug Corner, who owns the building next door to the soon-to-be pot shop, has predicted the new store will bring an unprecedented wave of traffic to the area, and not in a good way.
“It’s not a regular retail store,” Corner told the Peterborough Examiner of the planned retail spot. Although he did not elaborate on his calculation, he said he predicts 50 to 100 customers daily for his new neighbour.
The store owners also have plans to hire between 20 and 30 staff members in the area for both full and part-time positions.
“Where are they parking?” asked Corner, who worries that cannabis clients will double-park on his property or those of his neighbours. “It is going to be — in our belief — a disaster.”
Growers Retail owner Michael Potts disagrees with Corner’s prediction. “We would never encourage our customers to either park illegally, stop illegally on a roadway or park in lots that are not associated with our storefront,” Potts told the Examiner.
Although the public notice period for the burgeoning bud business ended in January, though, it has not yet been issued the green light to open up shop.
Currently, cannabis lovers in Peterborough must take a road trip to a neighbouring city with a licensed cannabis store, buy their product online from the Ontario Cannabis Store or purchase their weed and infused products from the illicit market.
