Jim Carrey revealed the source of his considerable comedic chops when he sat down with Conan O’Brien on Tuesday.
As the actor and host of the late-night talk show drew sketches of one another, Carrey retold the story of the time his father, Percy, met the legendary Rodney Dangerfield, according to Vulture.
“He said, ‘Hey Percy! Nice to meet ya! You don’t mind if I smoke a doob, do ya?’” Carrey said, in his best Dangerfield voice. “And then he said to my dad, ‘Uh, hey Perce, I’m sorry about this, man, I can’t help myself. I’m a fuckin’ pothead, you know what I mean? I mean, this shit makes me creative!’”
After telling Dangerfield he didn’t mind, the comedian asked Carrey’s father if he wanted to take a hit. “And my father quickly said, ‘Oh no, I can’t do that. If I smoke that I’ll be up to two packs a day in no time.’ And Rodney just fell off the chair and said, ‘Who the fuck is this guy? My writers are sucking, man!’” Carrey said.
“Where has this guy been?”
Apparently, the elder Carrey was spending his time playing the straight man to the insane comedic stylings of his son.
Carrey also revealed his own unique method for greeting house guests back in the days before he could afford a stunt double. “I would throw myself down a giant flight of stairs in front of the guest,” he told O’Brien.
“Then I would get up when they are shocked out of their minds and say, ‘Let’s see that again in slow motion.’ And I would go back to the top of the stairs and attempt to do it again in slow motion. And I would hit every step on the way down,” he said.
“I would end up at the bottom of the stairs at their feet and then my father would come in with his patented line, which he loved to do, which is, ‘Yep, he’s not just a ham, he’s the whole pig.’”
Like father, like son.
