Singer chose to run into traffic rather than unlock his phone for the knife-wielding bandits.
Harry Styles picked one direction and ran as fast as he could when a group of thieves tried to steal more than his heart this past Valentine’s Day.
The 26-year-old singer told Howard Stern that he was coming home from a friend’s house in North London when a group of shady looking characters with their faces covered caught up to him, according to The Sun.
“I cross the street and they cross the street, and I think, ‘For f—’s sake, I’m going to get robbed,’” he said. “The guys are like, ‘Can we talk to you for a minute?’ There’s nobody around and my heart’s pounding,” he said.
“He’s like, ‘Do you smoke weed? Do you want weed?’ I said, ‘No.’ He was like, ‘What have you got on you?’ And they gathered around me and I said, ‘I haven’t got anything.’ And he’s like, ‘Stop f—ing around.’”
The Sign of the Times singer said he tried to hold the muggers at bay by giving them the cash he had in his pocket, but they were more interested in what his headphones were plugged into.
“So I pull out my phone and I’m thinking, ‘OK, this is annoying, but I’ll wipe it and get a new phone.’ And then the guy’s like, ‘Unlock your phone,’ and the other one pulls his shirt up and he’s got a knife sticking in his pants, and I was like, ‘s–t.’”
Unwilling to give the thieves access to his precious celebrity contacts — which reportedly includes his One Direction bandmates, James Corden and Kendall Jenner — Styles scrambled to come up with a plan.
“I said, ‘I’m sorry mate, I can’t unlock my phone.’ The guy’s like, ‘You have 10 seconds,’ and he starts counting down. I was like, ‘I can’t.’”
Out of options, Styles decided to run into traffic. “I just ran into the road and tried to stop a car and, obviously, mad man runs into the road, you won’t let them into your car,” he said. “They don’t let me in, I try and get in another car and they don’t let me in. So, I just turned and ran back towards the area where I live.”
But, alas, this would be the day the singer’s famously eclectic wardrobe would come back to haunt him. “Usually, when I’m out walking, I’m wearing running stuff and this was the one time I was wearing like corduroy flares and shoes,” he said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to have to f—ing sprint all the way up this hill.’”
Fortunately, the robbers ran in the opposite direction with his money. Police are reportedly still investigating the incident, but Styles made sure to correct an erroneous report he saw in the wake of the traumatic event.
“They wrote there was only one guy, I’d like to clarify, there was more than one guy,” he laughed. “There was a bunch of guys. There was 87 guys.”
