While rare, dispensary robberies do occur in Canada.
Police in Abbotsford, B.C. are looking for a masked suspect in the armed robbery of an unlicensed dispensary.
The robbery, which occurred on Tuesday evening, involved a man entering the pot shop on Clearbrook Rd., pulling out a firearm and ordering staff to hand over money and cannabis.
The mask worn by the suspect, who also donned a grey hoody, resembled the face of the Freddy Krueger character from the Nightmare on Elm Street horror movie franchise, according to Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Bird.
Law enforcement officers are also seeking the driver of a white Dodge minivan who witnesses noticed leaving the pot shop parking lot “in a rush,” almost causing a collision with another vehicle.
“We’re just trying to figure out what connection, if any, that minivan had to the robbery,” Bird explained.
While police have spoken to some witnesses who remained at the scene of the robbery, other clients of the shop left before law enforcement arrived.
Authorities are asking anyone present at the time of the incident and/or anyone who may have dash cam or CCTV footage to contact them as soon as possible.
While rare, dispensary robberies do occur occasionally in Canada. The incident follows several high-profile incidents in Edmonton, Sarnia, Oshawa and Vancouver, the last during which a man was shot and injured at a medical dispensary. This has sparked debates as to whether regulations requiring pot shop windows to remain covered are compromising the safety of workers and patrons.
Potential witnesses can contact Abbotsford police at 604-859-5225.
